October 2009 Courses

Tentative Course Offerings
Fall 2009
(weeks of October 5, 12, 19 and 26)

Knitting Fundamentals – 4 classes - $45
Wednesday 5:00-6:30 pm
October 7, 14, 21, 28

This course is for the novice to advanced beginner. Completion of this course is a prerequisite for all other Knit With Judy knitting classes. Even if you have knit for years, you must still take this course before enrolling in any others.

If you are a beginner, you will learn to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off, plus a myriad of other things as they come up, such as yarn characteristics, importance of gauge swatches, etc.

We can never have enough of the fundamentals. Most students take this course several times,* advancing as they go, with beginners learning from the more advanced knitters and the more advanced knitters benefitting from reviewing the instruction given to the beginners.

The more advanced students will learn several methods of increasing and decreasing, will become comfortable with knitting and purling in the same row and knowing when to do which, and will learn how to "read" the fabric so increases and decreases don't disturb the stitch pattern. Through a project that uses the skills you have mastered, you will learn some methods for repairing mistakes and begin to read patterns, even making simple adjustments.

--------------------------
*There is a 20% reduction for students who take this course again ($36).

Working with Color and Texture – 4 classes - $45

Update 9/21: Insufficient enrollment. Class cancelled. Try back in November.

Prerequisite: At least one session of Knitting Fundamentals.

Learn how to change colors, work with stripes, multiples colors and bobbins. Make beautiful fabric through the use of slipped stitches and companion yarns. You will start (and possibly finish) a project using one, or both, of these textures. You make take this course as often as you wish.*
-------------------------------------
*There is a 20% deduction for students who take this course again ($36).

Crochet Fundamentals – 4 classes - $45
Thursday 9:30 to 11:00 am
October 8, 15, 22, 29

This course is for the novice to advanced beginner.
There is no prerequisite for this course.

You will learn how to hold the yarn and make standard crochet stitches and shape. You will begin to read patterns and understand when crochet might be preferred over knitting, and you will see some of the unique things that can be made with crochet. Depending on the progress of the group, you may tackle a simple project. If you have something you wish to make, please bring it up in class.

As with the Knitting Fundamentals class, most students will take this course at least two times,* advancing as they go, with beginners learning from the more advanced students and the more advanced students benefitting from reviewing the instruction given to the beginners.

The more advanced student will work with colors and texture and learn how to make squares, work in the round, and make more exotic shapes.
----------------------------
*There is a 20% discount for students who take this course again ($36).

Your project (knit or crochet) – 4 classes - $45
Thursday 5:00-6:30 pm
October 8, 15, 22, 29

Prerequisite: For knitters, at least one session of Knitting Fundamentals and mastery of the concepts taught in that course. For crocheters, at least one session of Crochet Fundamentals and mastery of the concepts taught in that course.

Each student will begin (or continue) a personal project, and we will work on choosing yarn, gauge swatching, pattern modification, trouble shooting and finishing, as each student benefits from the issues faced by the others.

This will be an ongoing class, so you can take as many 4-week sessions as you wish. No discount is available for repeats of this course.

No socks yet (course coming up). As this will be a support class, with no specific teaching curriculum, students who wish to incorporate cables or lace into their project will benefit from completing the Knitting with Cables and Lace course before embarking on the project. Similarly, students who wish to use complicated color combinations or fabric designs would benefit from completing the Working with Color and Texture course.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some possible additions for the winter session:

Socks – 4 classes - $45
Prerequisite: At least one session of Knit With Judy Knitting Fundamentals. We will spread out the classes to give you an opportunity to get to each stage of the socks, as we learn to work with four double-pointed needles or two circular needles, make the leg, turn the heel, pick up gusset stitches and finish the toe.

Knitting Lace and Cables - 4 classes - $45

Prerequisite: At least one session of Knit With Judy Knitting Fundamentals. We will explore several methods of creating lace and several styles of cables, while learning the lace lingo and how to read charts. We'll explore the special challenges for gauge, as well as now to finish and block your work.

Felt Making (both knit/crochet and wool fleece) - 4 classes - $45
No prerequisite. Learn the fascinating process or knitting (or crocheting) large, floppy pieces and boiling the wool to make a dense felted fabric. Work with wool fleece (sometimes called wool tops or roving) to create traditional and artistic felted projects.
